Solid Steel Radio 09-08-13 - DK, Trevor Jackson, Thundercat Interview

Solid Steel Radio 09-08-13 - DK, Trevor Jackson, Thundercat Interview

DK opens the show with the brand new Roots Manuva single Stolen Youth, followed by Massive Attack remixed by this week's guest in his Underdog guise and the Algerian Rai sound of Fadela.

After this gentle start, the sample is flipped into the proto-jungle classic "We are i.e." from Lennie De Ice and Four Tet takes that essence and puts his own twist on it with his new track "Kool FM".

It's more new music from Jono McCleery and Cell Broco, classic house from Curtis McClaine and Scuba with an electro flavoured track leading into Mantronix and a few words from Edit king Albert Cabrera setting up for our guest.

We welcome Trevor Jackson in the 25th Anniversary slot this week and as ever, we asked for something different. In his own words;

"This mix consists of electro/freestyle/Miami bass classics & bonus beat edits by the likes of Chep Nunez, Omar Santana & the latin rascals, how they did what they did with just tape, a reel 2 reel & a razor blade still defies belief and continues to inspire me as much as it did when I first heard their work in the mid '80s.

There is no tracklisting & won't be because I come from a generation when Shazam. Discogs, eBay & Google didn't exist, when I first heard something on the radio in a club or a mixtape it often took me many months of desperate searching to find out what it was, I'm more than happy to inflict this highly satisfying laborious experience upon you, you'll appreciate it in the long run."

In hour 2 it's an interview with Bassist/songwriter/vocalist Stephen Bruner, aka Thundercat. Will Ashon talks to him about his introduction to music, some of the tracks that have influenced him over the years and his new album Apocalypse which is out now on Brainfeeder.

Along with tracks from that album, we also hear music from Jaco Pastorius, Stanley Clarke, De La Soul, Chick Corea and Clams Casino.

Following that, DK returns for a brief selection of tracks from George Duke RIP. His career not only produced many solo albums, but he has also played on countless albums over the years. We hear some of his tracks from the MPS label including 'For love (I come your friend)' as covered by Thundercat, plus his work alongside David Axelrod, Stanley Clarke and Billy Cobham with the track sampled by Souls of Mischief for 93 'til Infinity.
