Solid Steel Radio 17-05-13 - DK & Gilles Peterson

Posted on 17/05/2013

It's two bumper mixes this week as we gear up for the Bonobo all day festival at the Roundhouse on Saturday 18th May. Our guest in Hour 2, Gilles Peterson will be DJing at the event and Solid Steel will be broadcasting live all day with Coldcut, DJ Food and DK on Roundhouse Radio from 2pm (UK Time).

DK opens this week with a track off the awesome Thundercat album and into Ten Tigers from Bonobo, the return of Slum Village and back to '95 for T Power & MK Ultra.

Then it's another spin for the Machinedrum mix of Clissold, Letherette (who are also playing at the Roundhouse), Joy Orbison and Owiny Sigoma Band. African and Latin rhythms take over with Irakere, Roberto Roena, Four Tet remixing Rocket Number Nine and Azymuth ahead of their UK tour next month.

The beats turn heavy with Spatial, Dorian Concept, Walter Ego and two from Die & Addison Groove, before BRTSH KNIGHTS and Ronnie McNeir add a soulful slant. And with the Fela Kuti tribute show also happening this weekend in London, we feature a 1975 cover version from Johnny Rodrigues and a track from the legend himself, off the suitably titled 'Fela's London Scene' album recorded at Abbey Road.

For the second hour we welcome Gilles Peterson in the slot for the 25th Anniversary of Solid Steel, a DJ who (along with Coldcut) also presented a show in the 90's on Kiss FM. For this mix he's layed down a 'Brit Funk 1977 - 1982' mix, returning to a period of music that was an important part of his life growing up. Music from independent labels, some run by record shops, like the first track by Cache on Groove Records.

This is followed by the classic 'Trip to your mind' by Hudson People, a record that a 15 year old Gilles Peterson caught from them in the crowd at a Purley all-dayer. Then it's more music from the likes of Freez, Atmosfear, Hi Tension, TW Funkmasters and Sun Palace, but to hear more about this mix from the man himself, check out this video he made for us.

Gilles Peterson will be DJing at the Bonobo Roundhouse festival this Saturday 18 May from 8.45pm - 9.45pm - for a full lineup and more details on Solid Steel's Roundhouse Radio takeover, head here.

Solid Steel Roundhouse Radio Takeover

If you can't make the Bonobo all-dayer this Saturday, fear not as Solid Steel will be taking over the Roundhouse Radio airwaves from 2pm, presented by Jonathan More of Coldcut, DJ Food aka Strictly Kev and DK.

They'll be spinning records and interviewing artists live from the show deep into the night so if you didn't get a ticket this is most definitely the next best thing! Tune in live from 2pm on Saturday 18 May here.

Funki Porcini Presents City: The Future Of Cinema Is Here

Posted on 16/05/2013

This weekend Funki Porcini will debut his new City project as part of this year's Norfolk & Norwich Festival. City is a form of interactive cinema, using sound design and projections to create an immersive experience; the setting, a city in the dead of night.

Funki Porcini has assembled a large-scale, detailed composite of a city at night from hundreds of HD clips and will project a stretched panorama across a 16 metre wall at Epic Studios, Norwich.

City will be screened to the public every twenty minutes on Saturday 18 May between 3pm - 6pm, on Sunday 19 May between 12pm - 6pm and Monday 20 May between 12pm - 6pm - entry is free.
