Solid Steel Radio 25-10-13 - DK, Marshall Jefferson, Ollie Teeba (The Herbaliser)

DK opens the first hour this week with another Cid Rim track from the Mute City EP, "Numbers on the Board" by Pusha T, followed by the original Anthony King and John Matthews sample.

Then it's new music from Mark Pritchard, new Ninja signing Lee Bannon and two tracks from the incredible William Onyeabor synth-driven Afro funk compilation on Luaka Bop. It's more album tracks from Special Request and Four Tet, a Pilooski remix for Owiny Sigoma Band and we close this mix with '90s New York house from Pal Joey.

This takes us into our next guest who is a true legend of House music. Marshall Jefferson put his stamp on a lot of the genre defining tracks of the late eighties, touching on Acid and Deep house along the way.

His productions under various names are just one part of the huge Trax Boxset that is out now, giving you the first 75 12" releases on this seminal Chicago label. His mix takes us through some of his pre House favourites with music from Nancy Martin, Klein & MBO, Kano and ending with his own classic track "Move Your Body".

In Hour 2, Ollie Teeba from The Herbaliser and Soundsci gives us his own take on 'War of the Worlds' for the Solid Steel 25th Anniversary. Here in his own words;

'When I was 8 or 9 years old I heard Jeff Wayne's musical version of H.G.Well's 'War Of the Worlds' for the first time. It scared the pants off me. For years afterwards I listened to the record over and over. It is certainly one of the things from my childhood that cemented my interest in film scores.

Though not a film score per se. Its marriage of rock music with orchestral arrangements to tell a story, had me transfixed. The combination of funky rock with sinister string parts would heavily influence and partially shape the sounds that, years later Jake Wherry and I would be making in The Herbaliser.'
