Grasscut return with “The Door In The Wall,” a further heightening of their electro-pastoral psychedelia, which runs Krautrock up against the Brians (Wilson and Eno) and the non-conformist spirit of Robert Wyatt. Expansive and whimsical all at once, Andrew Phillips explains that, “I wrote this very quickly on an old Casio keyboard with a great organ sound, bashed down the drums and then the lyrics just fell out pretty complete. It was influenced by Hilaire Belloc’s ‘The Winged Horse’ – he’s flying over England towards the Channel on his feathery steed, I’m on Southern Trains heading back to Brighton. Both having transcendental experiences of England, though.”

Remixes come from Bibio and PRDCTV. Signed to Warp and described by Marcus Eoin of Boards of Canada as “the antidote to the modern laptopia of pristine electronic music,” Bibio turns up the bucolia to 11, leaving you imagining Trumpton getting down to Reggaaeton on valium. PRDCTV, meanwhile, is one of Ninja Tune’s latest signings, a young Oxford-based producer who has also recently remixed These New Puritans. He chooses to focus on the ecstatic undertones of the original, beefing up the drums and building to a series of climaxes which show that Grasscut can work on the dancefloor as well as in the cranium.

Grasscut are Andrew Phillips and Marcus O’Dair. Phillips is an award-winning film and television composer with over one hundred screen credits. O'Dair is a double bassist, keyboards player whom he met in Brighton. Already acclaimed by Tom Robinson as “making genuinely daring music that still remains an accessible and enjoyable listen,” Grasscut are set to release one of the oddest, most listenable and strangely uplifting albums of the year.
