Roses Gabor’s 2012 single Stars announced her as one of the most exciting new voices in British music. Taking her from bubbling-under-promise to bona-fide, blasting-from-the-speakers ubiquity, the single was as forward-thinking and fresh as it was authentic; a song that could only have come from the post-everything melting pot of UK genres. "Stars" had Zane Lowe lauding Gabor as ‘the future of R’n’B,’ was Huw Stephens’ BIG THING’ and made the In New Music We Trust playlist on BBC Radio One.

But "Stars" was no overnight sensation - the road to that point had been long and colourful. A lot about Gabor can be explained by her childhood, during which she began writing poetry, short stories, fantasies and fairytales aged only 4. That goes a long way to explaining how naturally her creativity pours fourth.

She describes herself as ‘a Piscean, a daydreamer, a free thinker.’ She likes the magic in life and art. She’s of Grenadian heritage, born and raised in West London, and grew up in a household in which everything outside of metal and classical was played. As such, she has always listened to ‘EVERYTHING.’ That shows too, in the broad scope of her music, in which there’s a refreshing sense of throwing off the straitjacket of genre.

When she grew older, she began to spend the majority of her time dreaming up creative ideas and concepts for new art and songs. She still does to this day. Not content simply to sing, she also writes and produces. It might be useful to note that artists with that multidisciplinary thirst are often the most exciting to hear.

She began to love the merging of rap and R’n’B that she heard in Mary J Blige, Janet Jackson and The Dungeon Family. At the same time, uptempo dance music thrilled her – something that would later find an outlet in her collaborations with Redlight and Shy FX.

In a sense, the third passion she developed completes the picture of the influences you can hear in her music. The depth of vision of two great artists blew her away. “Bjork is so otherwordly; a true creative in every sense of the word, and a true inspiration to me. The way her vocals dance through the song, mixing genres and weaving their way from beginning to end… the visual aesthetic always so exciting. She’s wonderful!”

The other artist was that true original force of pop music in the late 20th Century, Michael Jackson. “He painted genreless musical pictures of Freedom,” Gabor says. “…I’ll forever be awestruck.

All this depth of passion and interest paid off, when Roses’ own career as a musician was instantly fruitful. She became the voice of "Noodle" in the British animated band “Gorillaz,” singing on their sophomore album Demon Days, which went platinum and spawned Roses’ first UK Number 1 in the brilliant "Dare."

She was awarded BBC Radio One’s ‘Hottest Track in the World Right Now’ with "Pharaohs," the song she penned for SBTRKT. The track received over 4 million hits on YouTube.

Her debut solo single "Stars" was produced by dance music magician and Raekwon collaborator Redlight, and received heavy rotation on Radio One and specialist radio in the US. The single’s success led to a string of festival appearances throughout Europe.

With a list of collaborators that already includes Damon Albarn, Redlight, Buraka Som Sistema, Ty, We Are The Shining, Toddla T, Swindle and Rowdy SS (ATR,) Roses Gabor already has a true musical pedigree, and stands as one of the most exciting prospects in quality British pop music. She’s as down to earth as she is a dreamer though, someone who loves dancing, drinking herbal tea and yoga as much as she does cutting edge fashion.

2014 has seen her release the aptly named single, Rush. Made in an electrified, inspired couple of hours with producer MNEK (Rudimental, Duke Dumont, Tinie Tempah) in his East London studio, it’s utterly compulsive. Roses says that the song is about the electrical chemistry that links two people together, the unseen but unbreakable forcefield. ‘It’s the magnetic charge...The life in the pit of your stomach...That Emotional connection... All these things you can’t run away from… even if you wanted to..."

Roses is now busily working away on her debut album, which is eagerly awaited to say the least. With her depth of imagination, skill and talent, it promises to be a thrillingly widescreen take on pop music worth listening to.

Do U Know Toddla T? 

In 2007 Toddla T (aka Tom Bell) was working in a shoe shop in his hometown of Sheffield. Then just 19 and living at home with his parents, he DJ'd at weekends and was producing beats and tracks with his friend Scott as Small Arms Fiya.

Now it's 2011 Toddla T is making the finishing touches to his second album on the legendary Ninja Tune label, has a regular slot on BBC Radio 1, and has produced tracks for some of the UK urban scenes biggest stars (hands up Tinchy, Jammer, Bashy, Roots Manuva and Ms Dynamite). 

He DJ's around the globe, has a slew of remixes under his belt (Hot Chip, Gyptian, Gorillaz, Major Lazer for starters), is a star of his own Toddla TV channel online and has worked in studios from Kingston Jamaica to Kingston upon Hull. Not to mention the recent launch of his Girls Music Label which, after only three releases has already featured productions by British dance music heroes Sticky and Roska.

So how do you get to be one of the leading lights of UK dance music in 4 short years?

Much can be attributed to Toddla’s phenomenal talent, drive and ambition. He has good taste and keen eyes and ears in all elements of British youth culture. However, the man himself modestly explains that it has just as much to do with the sea change which has taken place in British Pop music in the last few years. 

When Toddla first started taking to the decks outside of his home town he was worried that no one would "get it" and to start with, many didn't. (Listen to the track "Roadtrip" from debut album Skanky Skanky to hear an amusing account of just such a night). No one could quite work out who Toddla was. Was he an MC? or the producer at the front of a now forgotten, media created "UK Digi-Dancehall revolution"? Was that skinny white kid the voice singing about Rice n Peas? Surely not.

Not allowing this confusion to get in his way T stuck to his guns. He could smell a change in the air and knew that what he was doing was worth sticking with. He made a mixtape, The Toddla T Ghettoblaster Vol.1 in 2008 and put it up for free online. It was downloaded by more than 10,000 people, was brilliantly received and announced Toddla as a talent to be watched. People other than club promoters and other DJ's started to hear about him and his club sets started to get more and more busy with people who were there to see him. Longtime studio spar and MC Serocee joined him on the road and the pair started to travel far and wide around the UK spreading the good word. 

His debut album Skanky Skanky was released in January 2009, this was followed by a Fabric live mix album and a lot of requests for his production skills with everyone from Major Lazer to Grandmaster Flash getting in touch. Over a Guinness or two in his new London local (he decamped from Sheffield to the capital in 2010) Toddla reflects on the last couple of "pretty crazy years", the current UK scene and sets out his stall for what promises to be a very busy and successful 2011. 

"When I was first signed (to 1965 Records) every kid wanted to be in a band. The Arctic Monkeys, The Libertines and all that were really popular, me and my mates who were into Notorious B.I.G and dancehall were really in the minority. Nowadays kids want to be Skream and Benga, or Tinchy or N-Dubz and because of that all their points of musical reference have changed" 

It's true, there has been a huge shift in musical aesthetic, away from the skinny jeans and Chuck Taylors of The Strokes and the seemingly never-ending bandwagon that followed. What Toddla's saying here is borne out of the recently released statistic that rock music has had its worst year in the UK charts since 1960 with only 3 rock bands making it into the top 100 songs of 2010.

As a backdrop to Dizzee, Tinie, Tinchy et al storming the charts, the explosion of dubstep and subsequent re-evaluation of bass-driven, UK club music has seen a major shift in what people aged 15 - 25 are raving to. Where Soulwax and SMD and their like were ruling the clubs 2002 - 2006 nowadays seasoned campaigners like Shy FX and David Rodigan are championed by kids who weren't born when they were first spinning records.

Watch Me Dance is a bold step forward for Toddla T. Fans of Skanky Skanky will find plenty that will please them but for the countless thousands of clubbers who know Toddla T the DJ but haven't heard his productions this second album may come as a surprise. Toddla explains... 

"I've been busiest in the last two years as a DJ, so of course this album has a big dose of the sounds and production techniques that I'm out there representing in the clubs every weekend but if you're looking for tops-off jungle or 4x4 bassline tearouts you won't find them here. This is definitely still a record for clubbers, but it's the one they'll listen to at home with their mates or every day on the way to work" 

In Watch Me Dance Toddla has created a dubwise, street-soul masterpiece. In a typically precocious reference to records that were made when he was 4 and 10 years old respectively Toddla sums it up. "A bit of the Soul from Soul II Soul Club Classics and a bit of the Left-field from Leftism, I've been listening to those now and again, they took in a whole load of club music and made an album that summed something up and were great to listen to at the same time."

Hardest working man in show business? Trouper? Tireless? However you want to put it, be sure of one thing: When DJ Vadim first heard the phrase "Don't Sleep" he obviously took it literally.

Over the last decade few people can have put so much time and energy into the culture they love. Founder of Jazz Fudge in early 1995, A&R, producer, DJ, promoter, record collector, radio presenter, occasional painter, writer, in-house producer/DJ and cohort of Latin Grammy nominees and Spanish hip hop super group 7 Notas 7 Colorez, Vadim has certainly been keeping himself busy. And that's before we even mention his DJing itself, which has seen him perform in virtually every country in Europe (east and west), all over North America, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Israel, Turkey, South America and South East Asia (often within one year!). He has also performed with the likes of DJ Krush, Company Flow, The Roots, Pharcyde, Public Enemy, Beat Junkies, Dilated Peoples, Kraftwerk, Ed Rush, Morcheeba and Paul Weller, as well as at events like Glastonbury and the Moscow Street Ball festival (to over 40,000 people!). To describe the man as an internationalist almost seems to sell him short.

In 1992, Vadim Peare bought a sampler and started working on the music that would become 'Abstract Hallucinating Gases' and 'Headz Ain't Ready' (both released on his own label, Jazz Fudge). Later in the year he signed to Ninja Tune and began work on his debut LP, 'USSR Repertoire'. From these early recordings came a remix LP, 'USSR Reconstruction', featuring DJ Krush, Kid Koala, Mark B and Silent Poets, plus various 12"s both for Ninja Tune and Jazz Fudge, and a mixtape and CD with DJ Primecuts (International Turntablist Federation World Champion '99 and Scratch Pervert). In 1999 there was the abstract funk collaboration LP, 'The Isolationist', produced by Vadim, scratched by DJ Primecuts and vocalled by New York avant-rappers Antipop Consortium. Relentless international touring followed with Swollen Members, then Company Flow, then Jazz Fudge, all of which led to the purchase of yet more obscure and dusty vinyls to add to an already burgeoning collection.

This all culminated in his critically-acclaimed last album, 'USSR: Life From The Other Side' in 1999. The record featured Company Flow, the Scratch Perverts, Iriscience (from Dilated Peoples), Blade and many others, and caused quite a storm in USA with the track 'Your Revolution', featuring Sarah Jones. The song was banned by the FCC (USA radio regulators) for explicit and provocative lyrics, despite Jones actually satirising the attitudes and words of the mainstream rap and r&b that could be heard pumping out of the radio every day.

Hardest working man in show business? Trouper? Tireless? However you want to put it, be sure of one thing: When DJ Vadim first heard the phrase "Don't Sleep" he obviously took it literally.

Over the last decade few people can have put so much time and energy into the culture they love. Founder of Jazz Fudge in early 1995, A&R, producer, DJ, promoter, record collector, radio presenter, occasional painter, writer, in-house producer/DJ and cohort of Latin Grammy nominees and Spanish hip hop super group 7 Notas 7 Colorez, Vadim has certainly been keeping himself busy. And that's before we even mention his DJing itself, which has seen him perform in virtually every country in Europe (east and west), all over North America, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Israel, Turkey, South America and South East Asia (often within one year!). He has also performed with the likes of DJ Krush, Company Flow, The Roots, Pharcyde, Public Enemy, Beat Junkies, Dilated Peoples, Kraftwerk, Ed Rush, Morcheeba and Paul Weller, as well as at events like Glastonbury and the Moscow Street Ball festival (to over 40,000 people!). To describe the man as an internationalist almost seems to sell him short.

In 1992, Vadim Peare bought a sampler and started working on the music that would become 'Abstract Hallucinating Gases' and 'Headz Ain't Ready' (both released on his own label, Jazz Fudge). Later in the year he signed to Ninja Tune and began work on his debut LP, 'USSR Repertoire'. From these early recordings came a remix LP, 'USSR Reconstruction', featuring DJ Krush, Kid Koala, Mark B and Silent Poets, plus various 12"s both for Ninja Tune and Jazz Fudge, and a mixtape and CD with DJ Primecuts (International Turntablist Federation World Champion '99 and Scratch Pervert). In 1999 there was the abstract funk collaboration LP, 'The Isolationist', produced by Vadim, scratched by DJ Primecuts and vocalled by New York avant-rappers Antipop Consortium. Relentless international touring followed with Swollen Members, then Company Flow, then Jazz Fudge, all of which led to the purchase of yet more obscure and dusty vinyls to add to an already burgeoning collection.

This all culminated in his critically-acclaimed last album, 'USSR: Life From The Other Side' in 1999. The record featured Company Flow, the Scratch Perverts, Iriscience (from Dilated Peoples), Blade and many others, and caused quite a storm in USA with the track 'Your Revolution', featuring Sarah Jones. The song was banned by the FCC (USA radio regulators) for explicit and provocative lyrics, despite Jones actually satirising the attitudes and words of the mainstream rap and r&b that could be heard pumping out of the radio every day.

Following this tour Kid Koala performed DJ sets in Australia, Asia, Europe, Russia, North America and South America, all the while working on a new book.

Kid Koala's most recent release on Ninja Tune was 'Your Mom’s Favorite DJ' in 2006. On this record he shows that his chosen means of expression (the turntable) is used not as a way of showing that he can do faster crabs than anyone else, but as a way of telling stories. Although there is the romance, silent movie comedy and swing that your mother may well smile at and even shake her booty to, the enthralling deftness and complexity you’d expect from Kid Koala is also here - woven together with classic hip hop beats, breaks and generous swathes of heavy guitars.

In 2009, Kid Koala put together 3 'Music to Draw To' performances in Montreal for which he basically invited people to come and draw while he played records. There was no dancing allowed, but people could enjoy a free cup of hot chocolate, purchase some treats and either draw or do some writing. These events were initially created just for fun, but they became a huge success. As the series progressed, he received more and more requests for us to take our event to other parts of Quebec, North America, Europe... Even South America and South Africa...

Later that year, Kid Koala embarked on another journey, that of presenting a project called 'The Slew' – live with the former rhythm section of Grammy Award-winning Australian rock band Wolfmother. Featuring drums, bass/keys and DJs working across a truly excessive six turntables, the set featured raw guitar cuts and heavy beats that set out as a one-time-only tour across North America. Due to the high demand by fans for a return and the amount of fun the band had playing together, they toured the North American Jazz Festival circuit and also appeared at SONAR Spain and Chicago. Somewhere in between their busy tour schedule the ex-Wolfmother rhyhtm section joined Kid Koala in the studio to lay down some new songs. Currently Dynomite D is working on the songs at his studio.

In late 2010, Kid Koala finsihed his latest graphic novel and soundtrack titled 'Space Cadet'. To work out the accompanying live show and gallery exhibition, he took part in an artist residence at MASS MoCA (Massachussetts Museum Of Contemporary Art) in December. The Space Cadet Headphone Concert and Gallery debuted on December 11 with 2 shows. The novel and soundtrack are set to be released during 2011 through Pigeon Press and a world tour will commence soon after.

There is a certain element of playfulness and wonder that can be heard in the music of the Viennese-born, self-taught multi-instrumentalist and producer Oliver Thomas Johnson, aka Dorian Concept.

After being exposed to hip hop in his early teens, he started to experiment with music production software on his parents’ computer at the age of 15. Around the same time, he picked up the piano, electric bass, and soprano saxophone, and since then he has been fascinated by combining the world of music production with the one of instrumental improvisation.

Dorian Concept started his career as a typical “bedroom producer” with a MySpace page in his late teens and enrolled in the University of Applied Sciences in Salzburg to study multi-media art in 2005. Just five years later, he was performing at the Royal Albert Hall with the Cinematic Orchestra, a group he had always admired, at the twentieth anniversary gala of Ninja Tune.

Some of the important stations of Dorian Concept’s rise from a bedroom producer studying in Salzburg to a Royal Albert Hall performer date back to 2006, when he started uploading a series of short videos of himself improvising on synthesizers on Youtube ­ starting with "Fooling Around on MicroKorg” ­ that have garnered over a million hits. Within a year, BBC radio greats like Benji B, Giles Peterson, and Mary Anne Hobbs championed his early digital releases, and shortly thereafter he started touring internationally.

In 2008, he participated in the Red Bull Musical Academy and released his first EP Maximized Minimalization on the Viennese label Affine Records. This EP ­ along with the subsequent track “The Fucking Formula” ­ was his take on instrumental hip hop at the time. His single “Trilingual Dance Sexperience” became a beast of its own right, acknowledged as a landmark for that unique Dorian Concept sound. Boomkat described it as “what sounds like the culmination of the last 10 years of techno, grime, hiphop club music and cutting-edge electronics attempting to race each other to the finishing line of the decade.”

In 2009, Kindred Spirits/Nod Navigators released his debut album When Planets Explode, which enjoyed critical and underground acclaim. The next two years were a blur of different cities and stages that brought his live show to Australia, Asia, all over Europe, and the States, while playing keys as part of Flying Lotus’ live band in between. His improvisational skills and virtuosity on his trusty MicroKorg shine during his animated live performances.

Dorian Concept’s jazz-influenced beat concoctions reap havoc on the dance-floor but never lose their sense of musicality. Unconventional chord changes, expressive dynamics and quirky layers of counterpoint melodies are parts of his unmistakable musical voice. He dots effortlessly through different genres and styles: from sublime electronica to hyperactive garage to avant-garde dancehall. Therefore, it made perfect sense when the multifaceted imprint Ninja Tune invited Dorian Concept to contribute to its twentieth anniversary box set in 2010 with the standout track "Her Tears Taste Like Pears.” It was no surprise that Ninja Tune then added him to its roster, releasing an EP under the same title in 2011.

Shortly after the Ninja Tune EP, Dorian Concept decided to take some time off to craft a new sound. He abandoned his signature use of the Mikrokorg and started working with a Wurlitzer electronic piano and a handful of analogue synthesizers. Joined Ends - his forthcoming album on Ninja Tune - showcases a new sound that reveals a radically different side of his artistic repertoire. A departure from rigid beat-making, he has chosen to concentrate on his intuition and his keyboard skills. Dorian Concept is also expanding his much lauded live show into a trio with touring planned for Autumn 2014 and beyond.

Joined Ends is his most deliberate, focused, and liberating work to date.

Naeem Juwan, better known as MC Spank Rock, MC Super Disco Spank Ro' or just Spank Rock, grew up alongside two brothers and five sisters in a West Baltimore row house. Naeem began rapping in the 8th Grade, getting advice and ample criticism from a big sister who was a little more deep into the hip hop thing than he was. Through her, he was eventually introduced to Shaun J Period (the producer for Mos Def's groundbreaking "Universal Magnetic" EP), Mos Def and Last Emperor. Naeem, "moved to Philly, got wrapped up in the thriving 'Neo Soul' scene, started listening to punk, dropped out of college, partied like the world was ending and got rid of all of my hip hop cds." He was introduced by old school friend Chris Devlin aka Chris Rockswell to Alex Epton. Epton had known Devlin in Baltimore before moving to Boston to the New England Conservatory of Music where he "failed out" before moving on to New York, where he ended up joining pop-punk-electro outfit Zero Zero. After Alex had helped out engineering at sessions that Naeem was working on with Steve McReady, the MC began to go and visit the producer in Brooklyn. After the release of the album, Juwan and Epton split, Naeem signing to Downtown Records and Alex concentrating on his own production work as XXXChange.  Epton has produced for and remixed a number of high profile acts including The Kills, Kele Orekeke, Björk, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Thom Yorke and TV on the Radio, as well as starting the band Win Win (along with Chris Devlin).  Meanwhile, Juwan released the "Abngers & cash" EP with Benny Blanco, recorded and toured with Mark Ronson and, in 2011, released a second Spank Rock album, "Everything Is Boring And Everyone Is A Fucking Liar."

Alfred Darlington isn’t a paint-by-numbers musician. From how he looks (early Victorian Dandyism), to how he makes music, or how he expresses
himself and views the world, his is a very individual ‘bespoke’ outlook. 

Alfred was born in Santa Monica in 1977 to an artist mother and professor father. Musical from very early on, as a child he was classically and jazz-trained in a number of instruments, but his interests were broad and varied – less a prodigy than a renaissance boy whose obsessions ranged from Greek legend to the mountains of Wales. As a 15 year old he finally persuaded his parents to take him to the Principality. Whilst in a YWCA in London he flipped the radio dial, found a pirate radio station and taped some UK rave and hardcore. “It was my first ‘Eureka!’ moment in music,” he says. 

Back in the US he joined local rock bands, jazz bands and ska bands, which he enjoyed but felt limited by, too. At home he was listening to Warp, Ninja and your harder electronic stuff. He started DJing out the more leftfield side of drum & bass and making his own rudimentary productions. They were meant to fit the d&b template but they kept turning out different and from his outsider’s experiments his own style was born. He chose the name Daedelus as he had a childhood obsession with invention, and what was he doing, after all, if not tinkering and fiddling and experimenting like the “gentleman inventors” of old? 

In 1999 he started DJing on Dublab.com for his 'Entropy Sessions' and began dropping in his own early demo productions. Carlos Nino (of Ammoncontact) had the show after him and usually pushed Alfred out the studio as quickly as possible as he was not so enamoured with Alfred’s leftfield-electronic DJ style, but when he heard a tranquil Daedelus production he took Daedelus and introduced him to the LA scene. Nino placed Daedelus tracks on two influential compilations and then Plug Research released his debut album, 'Invention' in 2002. Remixers included Madlib, who later took Daedelus' accordion parts and used them on 2004's Madvillain record. 

In 2003, he was booked to play a show in San Diego by Brian Crabtree and Peter Siegerstrong and the pair asked him to test out an early prototype of the Monome. "It’s a Non-traditional electronic instrument,” Daedelus explains. “Basically it allows for massive improvisation." Since then Daedelus has continued to use this revolutionary controller, bringing much genuine liveness to the sometimes static world of performed electronic/dance music. 

In 2003 he did 'The Weather' album with Busdriver and Radioinactive and the remix album 'Rethinking the Weather' on Mush records. 2004 saw the release of 'Of Snowdonia' on Plug Research, the album with which Daedelus says he first “felt true artistic confidence, finding a true voice. I was finally in the right zone.” 

There was certainly no let up in his creativity. Also in 2004 he released the concept album 'A Gent Agent' on micro-label Laboratory Instinct. The 2005 album 'Exquisite Corpse' on Mush featured the likes of TTC, Mike Ladd and MF DOOM. Ninja signed Daedelus for UK/Europe (a relationship which reached its full expression on 2008's 'Love To Make Music To', his first album for the label worldwide and put together with the help of their team).

In 2006 'Denies the Day's Demise' came out, a record showcasing his love of Brazilian music. Last year he released his first live album, 'Live At Low End Theory', and 'Fairweather Friends EP'. Later that year came the release of his collaboration with his wife, Laura Darling, as the pastoral 'The Long Lost'. 

Since his last album 'Love To Make Music To' for Ninja there has been no let up in Daedelus’ productivity. He has remixed or been remixed by and produced with all of his LA scene peers including Flying Lotus, Nosaj Thing, The Gaslamp Killer, Baths, and countless others from further afield. In addition, singles and EPs under his own name have come out with Brainfeeder, All City, Magical Properties (the Daedelus home-imprint), Alpha Pup, Warp and Stones Throw. And all the while his reputation has grown internationally, his place in the LA scene has also solidified as a musician that many of the hottest names in the city turn to for everything from bass clarinet licks to advice on obscure electronics; all the while with a continuous string of tour dates across North America, Asia, Europe, the UK, and beyond. 

2011 starts not only with his new album but the meticulous planning of a huge tour featuring guest vocalists from his 'Bespoke' LP and with a spectacular visual show curated in part by Emmanuel Baird (of Manchester's Warehouse Project and Hoya Hoya nights) which will feature a top secret new invention codenamed ARCHIMEDES, promising to yet again re-invent live electronic performance.
