“Originally I had decided that I didn’t want any remixes done for my album ‘A View Of U’ unless they were super special. But DJ Phil reached out to me and asked me to send him stems from ‘Wait 4 U’, and I did not hesitate,” explains Travis who has a long held affinity and history with Chicago’s footwork movement, collaborating with one of the scene’s founding fathers DJ Rashad before his death in 2014.
“Phil is really one of the best to ever do it, one of my favorite footwork/juke producers of all time. I knew he would flip the original in his own unique way and he did not disappoint,” declares Travis. The influence of footwork/juke styles originating in Chicago on club music globally has been pervasive but this remix highlights a reciprocal flow as jungle has infused into the consciousness of those at the forefront of the footwork scene. “This tune lives in my DJ sets,” says Travis, “and I’m happy that it will now (hopefully) live in yours.”
Released in 2020, “A View of U” was a compelling presentation of Travis Stewart’s unique and progressive vision of club music. Critics praised the LA-based producer’s versatility, his expansive palette and the bold, sophisticated strokes of his production, the latest turn in a glittering career that has cemented his reputation as “one of electronic music’s biggest and brightest stars” (DJ Mag). The album featured an incredible cast of collaborators including Sub Focus, Chrome Sparks, Father (Awful Records), Freddie Gibbs, Mono/Poly (Brainfeeder), Tigran Hamasyan, Jesse Boykins III, Rochelle Jordan and Tanerélle, with Machinedrum also releasing two high-caliber remixes by A$AP Ferg and Shelley FKA DRAM.
Following the release, Machinedrum also debuted his “A View Of U” live show, a truly unique visual experience, the result of a collaboration with Daito Manabe (Ryuichi Sakamoto, Björk and Squarepusher) and his Tokyo-based creative studio Rhizomatiks, who built their own custom ‘4D Volumetric Capture’ technology that moves in real time between the real and the virtual worlds created by Manabe.
