A natural addition to the aforementioned album, “V O R T E X +” was conceived as a live performance project by Maori Karmael Holmes and Terence Nance and produced by BLACKSTAR Projects. The concert was an extension of Terence's first solo exhibition entitled SWARM at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, PA. The album was recorded live over two evenings at Union Transfer, Philadelphia in March 2023 with an 11-piece band directed by Anthony Tidd.
Creative powerhouse Terence Nance has established himself as one of America’s most forward-thinking filmmakers in the past decade – a boundary-breaking creative spirit who has the remarkable ability to shape the raw materials of his subconscious into poetic, political, and philosophical expressions of the cosmic sublime. He is perhaps best known for his Peabody Award-winning HBO series “Random Acts of Flyness”, an American late-night sketch comedy television series that he created, directed, starred in, edited, and scored in 2018 (with Season 2 airing in 2022). Most recently in 2023 Terence directed the visual component to André 3000's GRAMMY-nominated album “New Blue Sun”, a 90-minute film that complements the album's themes titled “Listening to the Sun”.
In 2020 he began his journey as the musical artist Terence Etc. self-releasing the EP “Things I Never Had”. This led to signing to his friend Flying Lotus’ label Brainfeeder and the masterful soul jazz album “V O R T E X” in 2022. The album was written and produced by Terence, along with long time friends and collaborators: Solomon Dorsey, Nick Hakim and his brother Nelson Bandela. Pitchfork praised the sheer ambition, complexity and cinematic nature of Terence’s world-building on “V O R T E X”: “Beauty lies in the eye of the V O R T E X: its stunning production buoys the spirit of its sobering lyrical contents.” The album was also highlighted in NPR’s “Best of the Week”, featured as Bandcamp’s “Album of the Day” and lauded in The Wire, CRACK and FADER.
